A small piece of history to be taken back to the US with me when we return --
No, not a piece of rock or tile hundreds of years old.
Not an antique found tucked away in a corner.
A rug -- not an old one, but a brand NEW one!
We drove to Arraiolos (see post of March 15, 2013) to pick up the rug I had ordered on our last trip to Portugal. I was SO excited to see it, touch it and be able to take it with me. A rug hand stitched specifically for me! This is a dying art that these women take much pride in as they sit day after day, in their tiny shops and make these masterpieces one stitch at a time.
Our stop in Arraiolos...
The tiny shop still stitching and repairing rugs. |
Absolutely beautiful!!! (Note the masterpieces hanging on the wall behind us!) |
A picnic lunch in the park |
The tiny shop and way above it, through the trees, is the castle |
Coffee and pastries for dessert |
... And the castle still stands majestically on the hill. |
So, the way I look at it,
this is a piece of history I will cherish in my home for years and years...
It's beautiful Ruth and will be such a special treasure in your home!
